Neck pain can be distracting or debilitating, depending on its severity. For chronic or severe neck pain, or pain that may have been caused by an injury, it is important to see a doctor as soon as possible to rule out any serious conditions that require immediate treatment.
However, stiff necks or kinks caused by sleeping wrong can often be effectively treated at home. Here are just a few of the methods you may want to try to relieve pain in your neck:
— Lay down. The human head is surprisingly heavy. Holding it upright can put a great deal of strain on your neck. If the muscles are sore, the simple act of being in an upright position can aggravate the condition. To help ease the burden on your neck muscles, try laying down with your neck in as straight of a position as possible.
— Apply ice. If your neck pain is the result of inflammation, ice can help reduce swelling, and thus relieve the pain. Never apply ice directly to your skin. Instead, wrap it in a soft towel and hold it on the area for no more than 10-15 minutes at a time.
— Try heat. Stiff muscles respond well to heat since it helps relax them. You can use a heating pad, a hot water bottle or even a hot shower to apply heat to your neck. Just don’t keep it on there too long since too much heat can increase inflammation, which in turn can increase pain.
— Take over-the-counter pain relievers. As long as you don’t have any medical conditions that could be affected by over-the-counter pain relievers, you may find them to be an effective way to treat the pain.
Finding ways to relieve neck pain can help you get back to feeling like yourself in no time at all.
